Fencing Ireland is pleased to announce the creation of a bespoke set of rules for fencing for the sport in Ireland.

Historically, we have broadly applied the international rules set by the FIE. Adaptations were often necessary to those rules, however, as they are not structured for national or local events but are rather aimed at international competition. These adaptations have previously been organised in a casual manner with no clear guidelines of when it was allowable to depart from international norms and when referees, competition organisers, etc. should be sticking with the rules exactly as written.

This is no longer the case! The Fencing Ireland rulebooks, linked below, will remove that ambiguity and provide fencers and officials alike with clear rules and standards to follow in all Irish competitions.

Fencing Ireland is delighted to announce that, from the 2025/26 season onwards, we are changing our membership and event management system to Ophardt Online, which can be found at: fencing.ophardt.online

Ophardt is a fencing specific system for membership and events that we are confident will be of huge benefit to Fencing Ireland and our members. This will become our new one-stop shop for membership purchases as well as rankings and entry to competitions, training camps, and courses.

Memberships, events, and courses will no longer be available on our old JustGo system, which will soon be shut down.

Important note: if you had an automatic renewal payment set up on JustGo, we have set your automatic subscription to “inactive” so that you are not inadvertently charged for a membership on the old system. You will need to purchase your Fencing Ireland membership annually on Ophardt.

Don’t forget that the new season starts on 1 September so now is the time to renew your membership. You can purchase your 2025/26 Fencing Ireland membership on Ophardt now!

If you require any help/guidance on how to use the new system, you can find a series of step-by-step guides on fencingireland.net/membership. More step-by-step guides are coming soon! If you cannot find your query answered there, please do not hesitate to email us on membership@fencingireland.net.

Fencing Ireland is pleased to announce that our selection policy for international events has been updated for the 2024-2028 period.

The new policy can be found here: http://www.fencingireland.net/international-selection-policy/

While much of the policy remains consistent, there are some key changes from the previous iteration, including:

For all categories of event, qualification is now based on results in the preceding season or the current season at the time of the application.

Expansion of qualification routes for FIE Satellites, U23 Circuit events, Senior FIE World Cups & Grand Prix events, including addition of national circuit events in many countries as potential routes to achieving selection criteria. These changes will give fencers an improved progression pathway to the highest level of the sport. A pathway with more options and a greater flexibility to allow athletes to plan their season as it suits them.

The 2024 5 Nations competition, held in Derry, Northern Ireland, on 16 November, proved itself a tremendous day for the Irish team who achieved a phenomenal second place overall finish and which saw our Men’s Foil team win their event outright! One of our best performances ever in this event.

Each of our six weapon teams won at least one of their three matches with each of Women’s Épée, Women’s Foil, and Men’s Épée winning two of their three matches. The highlight of the day, however, was Men’s Foil winning their weapon – starting with their toughest match the team pulled through against England with a 45-44 win having been 42-44 down! The foilists only got stronger from their with more comfortable wins over, first, Scotland and, later, Northern Ireland, to finish with three wins from three.

Final Standings
1. Scotland
2. Ireland
3. England
4. Northern Ireland

Congratulations to all involved in the Irish team and to NI Fencing for such an enjoyable and well run event. And well done to Scotland on their win.
